Acer was referring to media reports that Lanci has been recruited by Samsung Corp. and will begin to work at the Korean electronic giant’s notebook division in August.
Lanci left Acer in late March after eight years of service at the company. Since then, reports have been rife about the Italian PC-industry veteran’s next step. There have been speculations that major PC brands such as HP, Dell, Samsung or Lenova, could be Lanci’s next career stop.
In a recent media interview, Lanci said he was optimistic about Samsung’s potential for development.
Against this backdrop, local market analysts said they would not be surprised if Lanci indeed joins Samsung’s ranks next month as reported.
As Lanci is quite familiar with Acer’s management and operations and versed in distribution-channel management, his entry to Samsung would definitely deal a blow to Acer, the analysts forecast.
Market sources also said recently that Samsung is planning to buy HP’s laptop division to strengthen its inroads into the NB market, the company’s weakest section. If the deal is indeed struck, it could have a great impact on Taiwan’s NB makers, the sources said.
According to media reports, Samsung has agreed to pay for legal bills if Acer sues Lanci for joining its ranks. Acer’s contract with Lanci reportedly included a provision that prohibited him from joining its rival companies within a specified period of time after his departure.
The reports also said Samsung would demand that Lanci expand its NB market share within two years, otherwise, he would be asked to quit.
