As part of an ongoing expansion, Bethpage Federal Credit Union plans to open two Long Island branches later this year and three to five the following year.

The Bethpage-based credit union, originally founded to serve Grumman employees, already has grown to 23 Long Island branches. It has about $4 billion assets and 200,000 members.

The credit union plans to open a 3,000-square-foot branch in Patchogue in September, followed by a second the same size in West Babylon at a time this year yet to be determined.

Although Bethpage is in the midst of a brick-and-mortar push, that’s a departure for credit unions historically.

Credit unions have long relied on shared branches, which their members can use along with those of other credit unions. But as many credit union charters, including Bethpage, have been revised to give them access to more customers, they’re also branching out – literally.

“Bethpage is a growing institution,” said Michele Dean, the credit union’s senior vice president of lending. “We want to serve the membership. Long Island has 3 million people we can serve. We have 200,000. We’re looking to cover Long Island.”

Dean said Bethpage plans to open three to five branches, typically 3,00 square feet, the following year.

Bethpage members on Long Island also have access to a shared branch network including branches run by other credit unions and ATMs at 7-Eleven, Walgeens and Cosco stores without charge.

Dean said the credit union plans to open branches both in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The credit union, which serves about 400 employer groups as well as individuals, has about 60 percent of its members in Nassau County and 40 percent in Suffolk.
